Established in 1974, the firm's practice in 1986 amalgamated with H.N. Chippindall & Co., a specialist insolvency litigation practice operating in Sydney since 1924. The amalgamated firm was then named Kemp Strang & Chippindall, and from 1997 practices as Kemp Strang. In April 2001, the firm was joined by former partners of Greaves, Wannan & Williams, a leading firm practising agribusiness and rural law.

Kemp Strang played a central role in the formation and February 2003 launch of the Kennedy Strang Legal Group. Kemp Strang is one of four leading State-based legal firms who founded the affiliation. Christensen Vaughan of Perth joined the Group in October 2003. The Group has been formed to respond to client needs to provide comprehensive national legal services, while maintaining strong links to community and commercial organisations within the firms' respective States.
